  1. Dear Mr. Shekhar Kapur,
I am an Italian student and I am writing my graduation thesis, which is about the representation of british monarchy in postcolonial texts (both literature and cinema). As I admire very much your movies and in particular Elizabeth and Elizabeth: The Golden Age, I have decided to discuss them in my thesis in relation to the above-mentioned subject, focusing my attention on your personal interpretation of the historical icon of the Queen Elizabeth I. I was wondering if you can answer to a couple of questions about it, which would help me so much. I am a little bit puzzled about your decision to make a film about an English Queen, and above all about one of the great and most powerfull British monarch of the history, the symbol of Britishness par excellence and of the politic and cultural power of the old British Empire. I mean, you are Indian, and India was a British colony and suffered all the injustices and the abuse of power of the Empire, and the Indian and postcolonial writers that I study, you know, they usually refuse and reject this kind of historic figures, they attack colonialism and British values in general. So, where does come from you decision of accepting to direct these films? And, what kind of representation of british monarchy, and of the Queen Elizabeth I, in particular did you want to offer?
Your any possible reply would be so important and precious for me.
Thank you so much for your attention and very happy new year!
    Sincerely Yours,
    Mirella

  2. Dear Mr. Kapur,
thank you so much for your reply, I appreciate very much your kind interest.
Unfortunately I have not got a skype contact, but only a messenger contact (which is that of my email address) and a facebook profile.
So, I try to ask only one fundamental question: What kind of representation of British monarchy, and of Queen Elizabeth I in particular, as an Indian postcolonial director, did you want to offer?
I am aware that it is not a simple question to answer in few words, but if you prefer to answer me using messenger or facebook chat (or if you can use only skype, I could make my own contact), please let me know.
Any possible reply will be very appreciated. Thank you very much indeed.
    Sincerely Yours,
    Mirella

  7. Dear Shekhar Sir,
i was having a thought to talk to you for a while but i was not sure whether you will be so easily accessible because i had tried some other directors and they were not so easily available. the reason i have been sending you this post is regarding about a movie.i have seen your “Elizabeth” both parts and they were awesome. after watching the movie i just kept thinking about movie. actually what i want to say that we also have lots of lots of great indian warriors but when a movie is made based on them in india, there will be drama, songs which have nothing to do with the movie or the actual story. for example, jhansi ki rani Lakshmi Bai. she was the great warrior but the movie or tv serial based on her life are terrible. in those movies she is just shown some queen which always kept screaming and cursing on british people. yes! it was right that “i shall not give my jhansi to british” was the dialogue who kept a fire among peoples heart but there should be something more about her than this. all her feeling, her thoughts and some kind of real planning to defeat the british should be shown in the movies like you showed in “Elizabeth”. you know how beautifully these hollywood directors shows things like that. i mean you are also included in this. i must say the whole movie on the one side and ‘your final and last scene in which Elizabeth is standing on the world map and her face is glowing’ on the other side, i will prefer second one. that scene is perfect in the way it is shown. you know why i am asking you to think about this kind of indian history because you are the indian with the technologies needed for this job. other hollywood directors won’t go for this probably because they don’t know much about india except like slumdog millionaire. or the second reason they would make this only in english if they are some how agree to make this. so please think about this. i am not asking you to particularly make a movie on Lakshmi Bai.but if you think that this may be a good project, there is a writer you may heard of called Vrindavan Lal Verma. he worte a novel on Lakshmi Bai. i feel from my heart that india need some movie like elizabeth in the prospect of indian history cause its good to know about other countries history but you must have knowledge about your own.

  9. Dear Shekhar,

You may not remember me but I stayed with you as your guest in Mumbai at the beginning of 97, I think. Jeremy Nicholson and you were at Uni together. I think is how we were connected the first time. I can not believe that was 15 years ago! Anyway you were very kind to me as was your PA Rubina. I have moved to Canada recently and in moving have come across a letter from her and was wondering if you still know of her where abouts? It would be kind of fun to say hello again and see where each others lives have gone.

Anyway, realise that you will be super busy – but would be very grateful if you had any info that would connect me with Rubina again.

Hope you and your family are well and happy. Thanks for your time.

    Best Regards

    Richard

  10. Dear Sir,

It is my pleasure to share my information with you sir..,

This is Venkatakishore from Hyderabad. i was completed Master Degree in Mass communications 2008……

I was Established SS Chalanachitram an Independent Film Production Unit to produce Movies like to be Educate & Motivate Society with Entertain method and Use those returns of profits for Socially backward people development.

Why because There are two easy to reach the my message to people very fast and Quickly those are Cricket & Films. at the age of 30 when i start to learn cricket and get place in team India and fame as cricketer it is very difficult and not possible so that i was chooses Films. why because Cinema was No.1 entertainment media in India & it is correct way to educate the people and awake the people in India.

Impact of an Impact of an Incident….

I want to share My Life Experience with you,

My friend Miss. Swapna also completes Master Degree in Mass communication with me. She and other 4 of my classmates attended Interview in a national news channel. Except she remaining four members got Job conformation letters from the channel. Miss Swapna hurts and committed Suicide when her dead body was in her home, she got job conformation letter through post. if she waits for another half an hour she had a bright future.. but a valuable Human life closed because of false decision.

So that i was gathered information about Suicides deaths in India. I was shocked with that figures.

Do you know well about that…

16 persons attempting for suicide every hour in India.
    9 Among them dead.
Last five years as per Government of India…Official Health Bulletin Reports clarifies that human loss in India because of
    37% suicides
    26% health problems
    21% Accidents
    14% Crime deaths
    2% Miscellaneous deaths.

Suicide death rate grows 470 rapidly from last 8 years. more sad news on suicides that the age group between….

    12-21 Years 14%
    21-40 Years 51%
    40-60 Years 25%
    Above 60 Years 10%

Closing there valuable human life committing Suicides. clearly this figures shows us that more than 50% suicide deaths will be power and energetic Youth. they are attempting Suicides for silly causes.

So i feel to do some think to educate & motivate them who are thinking about Suicides or trying to attempt.

S0 that based on suicides i was write script. In that script we have only two characters.

” A Animal which have a special Quality “HUMANITY” is called as Human. if we miss that Quality then there is no difference Us and Other Animals.”

” A life long Journey between Born to Die of a HUMAN which is setup by the God was my script.”
And another part of my thinking was…..

  11. Hi Shekar,

You very correctly say for the creation to continue ,death is a necessity.

Since last night I had bee thinking why is there so much contradiction in life, example pleasure vs suffering, rich vs poor , life vs death ,success vs failure .And I accidentally found this today morning,For the “leela’ play of nature ,divine all this a kind of necessary,we know what is day ,because we know there is a thing called night , ans vice versa

  16. Dear Shekhar,

I am sure someone have asked you this question before. Have you considered writing a script on Indian dynasty in politics and Indian film industry? I read you blogs (not regularly because sometimes I find those poems boring.. like I find OSHO discourse sometimes beyond it’s existence and meaning in normal discourse of life) and realized the your writings have a thing that implies simplicity of a story to its core.

I wish someone would make a light comedy one day on Indian dynasty system that prevails among almost in every part of the society over there.

    Have a goo day.

    Cheers
    Rajan

  17. Dear Shekhar sir you the perfect person to share my views with

I am Aashim Chugh an MBA in Finance and also a national level lawn tennis player by profession. I’m successfully running and managing my own school and a learning centre for tennis at Sonepat (Delhi NCR ) and getting good success and helping my dad in his business and for my human part i runs an NGO here in which i work on rejuvenating the humanity, spreading smiles and kindness.

I always believe that every person is filled with some hidden talent, and as for me, I’m very passionate about story writing & telling and expressing my emotions through them. My stories are different and are related to the efforts & daily hardships of common man. I have a deep desire to showcase my talent to the world through movies and story telling. I have the art of transforming thoughts into words and at the same time I can visualise all the scenes in my mind while drafting them. i haven’t think to make my career in this but my passion cant stop me to get in contact to people related to this , that you can guide me more .

I have two scripts ready with all the characters and the concept defined. The synopsis and dialogues are in place as well. There is a beautiful saying “Action speaks louder than words” if you take my word’s then you’ll find that my piece of work would compel you to think and works to make our society a better place to live in. i want to introduce message & meaningful scripts.

. I’m handicapped in this Field by not knowing anyone in the Movie world. I was in Mumbai in March last year for a family function and did try a little, but the attempt went in vain.Writing for me is a passion and I believe if given a chance I’ll prove it to all that i am blessed with it.

I sincerely believe in four things as a sports person – Hard work, Patience, Confidence and a never say die Attitude,I am looking forward to meeting you.
    kindly acknowledge .

    Yours Truly

  26. Dear Sir,

Not sure if you would ever get to read this, but if you do then please accept my heartfelt gratitude and compliments towards one of your classic songs ‘Lakdi Ki Kaathi’ from Masoom. I am sure you would have heard this same story a thousand times in your illustrious career but I guess for every parent its a new experience and a special tale to narrate over and over. I guess there would be millions of similar untold stories. I guess I just got lucky to have found your blog to be able to convey my word of thanks to you.

This movie came out when I was 4 years old and now my daughter is about one and a half years old and the song still holds its magic. I always believed in the creative genius of this song. However, over the years it has become a classic anthem for all children and deserves to be applauded time and again.

I recently mentioned the song on my blog I have been keeping and publishing for my daughter and posted a little video I shot of her swaying to the tune.

Thank you so much for believing in the song and a special word of thanks to Gulzaar sahab as well for creating and delivering such wonderful imagery.

    Best regards,
    Himanshu Tandon

  28. Dear Sir,

Proposal For Making a Commercial Feature Film on Jain Ideology / History

The Jain Community is interested to promote and financially support a commercial feature film project which will depict the Jaina Story covering predominantly the theory of non-violence, vegetarianism, anekantvad (acceptance of different view point) etc. The film will also cover various Jain rituals, Tirthankars, Saints etc. etc.

So the idea is to tell the story of Jain Diaspora from the time of Bhagwan Adhinath to 2012. Although, quite a few small documentaries have been produced on this subject, but there is no commercial venture till now. Feature film “Gandhi” by Richard Attenborough inspires “Ahimsa Foundation” to launch this project to tell the world, the story of Jainism through a commercial feature film.

We have sounded and discussed the idea of this feature film with several prominent Jain organization / persons in and outside India and each one have shown strong inclination to be part of it.

In order to move further, we look forward to associate / join with a renowned and established film production authority / company to take up this project from concept to release level. The community and its reputed religious institutions intend to support you wherever required.

In case, you are interested to take up this project, please do let us know. We look forward to your reply.
I can also be contacted on my mobile number 98-100-46108.

    Thanking you

I am surprised after knowing the fact that you selected Brad Pitt in leading role of lord BUDDHA. Can i ask you to whom you planned about the actress of this film. I expect at least Bollywood not Hollywood actress (may be priti Zinta/Aishwarya Rai/Katrina/Dipika Pudukone etc..).
Hope a positive reply from your end!

  34. Sir,
I am a 24 Army vet, I did 3 years in the infantry. Sorry it took many years but I have seen your movie The Four Feathers. Words cannot describe what I feel about it. Simply wow. I just wanted to let you know you did a hell-of-a job on this movie. I lost all my emotions during my time serving in the infantry, but this movie took me outta that dry spell. The part where they were running in the desert after he got out of the prison with his friend by the help of Abu, when they were being chased I jumped outta my seat and ran with then until they got away. Unreal. Anyway, I just wanted to say thanks and hope to catch another one of your films soon, I’m sure they’re close to if not better than this one.
    Most Sincerely,
    Justin Levitt

  38. Hi Shekar,

I have recently had my novel “Blue Blood Mirage – On the Other Side of Illusion” published in Indiana.
The link to the novel: http://www.facebook.com/bbmirage.

    =================================================================
    Novel Synopsis:

Life for Faryal and her family is far from uncomplicated. Upon their return to Afghanistan from Jordan, her father, Jalal Sitam, learns that he is no longer welcomed by his own government and that his cousins are trying to steal his property—and by extension, his future.

Romaan, Jalal’s friend’s son, asks that Faryal be granted to him in marriage. On what should have been a joyous day, Faryal is kidnapped by Sardar, a powerful and dangerous criminal. Her family quickly agrees to pay the million dollars Sardar demands, but that is of
little consolation for Faryal. Fearing more for her chastity than for her life, she makes a frantic choice, but even death cannot save her; her attempt at suicide fails.

Desperate, she begs her kidnapper, a middle-aged man with two children, to marry her, to salvage what little honor she may still have. Devastated by the news, Jalal tries to stop her marriage to the criminal, but his plans are thwarted. He must learn that even men can be pawns in the same game. This is just a glimpse of adventure in Faryal’s life. As Faryal’s journey continues and the story unravels further, it takes more unimaginable twists and turns right to the end.

When the upper class sets standards, everyone must abide by them. They see everything perfect and build a mirage in their outlooks, mentalities, and approaches, which makes life more difficult than it already is. Afghan women have suffered for a million reasons that have not been their intrinsic faults. This novel, inspired by true events, is an exploration on the cultural injustices done to women.

    Best, Nasrat
