  1. I am a graduate student of social work in the United States. I have recently been researching the epidemic of suicide victims. Kerala India and some surrounding states has the highest rate of suicide not only in India but in the WORLD! Many of these suicides victims are middle class men and often their families. When I watched the TEDtalks video: Shekhar Kapur: We are the Stories we Tell, I was touched with an idea. Film is a most poignant form of media. As you say in the video, it touches hearts with music, drama, movement, etc. It touches people’s senses on a very deep level. I have been doing some work with Mathri Kochi regarding research alternatives, raising funding, and education. I will be visiting Kerala India in March for further study.

My question is: Would you ever consider making a movie or documentary regarding the perils of suicide in southern India. This could be educational. I would also desire it to provide hope for people BEFORE they get to the point of feeling a need to take their lives.

Please contact me to let me know your feelings regarding this type of venture.
… Because life is a rare gift that offers so much to oneself and to others …. when it is lived with hope!
    Thank you

  2. Shekhar, you may remember our meeting in a recording studio in Lahore where you were doing background music of your film The Bandit Queen. I am Irfan, son of late composer Khwaja Khurshid Anwar and a friend of Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. Your mention of wikileaks in connection with your taking a
photograph in Oxford Street has made me to send you this link of Ron Paul’s speech :

  6. Dear Sir,

I liked your post about the connection between food, emotions and spirituality. Thank you.

I have a small garden where I have planted some vegetables and herbs. My brother and myself talk to them for a few minutes daily, from our hearts.Sometimes I touch them while doing so, and sometimes I don’t. I can feel their loving energy envelope me when I do that, and when I have to cut the vegetables for cooking, I thank them for providing us with nourishing life force and energy. I know for sure that this contributes a great deal in the purity of the healing energies that flows when I channel energy in the healing sessions.

I would also like to mention another thing that I have noticed and recorded in my sessions with children with autism , attention defecit hyperactive disorder(ADHD) and learning disabilities- the children invariably say that they can feel the energy flow into their “stomach” area during the session. And, once the energetic balance there is restored, many of them say they feel it “flowing” inside their head.

“Medically ” speaking too, these children invariably come with a written note from the paediatrician mentioning they are addicted to junk food , and there is also a “leaky gut” theory that scientists are talking about in autism.

Channeling energy or Prana into the food and water that one consumes surely makes a difference to the way one feels.

The flow of prana/energy is maximum when the heart is open and filled with unconditional love.

On a parallel note, I had came across this link a couple of months back. I felt like sharing it with you . I found it interesting in parts :-). Pls take a look if you feel like it. There is a transcript too, if you simply want to read through it without having to look at the video clipping.

    thank you,

  10. Dear Mr. Kapur,

I live in London, and was watching your film ‘ Elizabeth the golden age ‘ with admiration last night. I thoroughly enjoyed it. Most particularly I appreciate your passion for British Tudor History.

I myself am very much interested in Tudor history, and am participating in a ghost tour at Hampton court palace this March!!

There is an unsolved mystery in the Elizabethan period, which I am most certain you are aware of. During the reign of Elizabeth 1, there was an affair developing between the queen and Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester with rumours of a possible marriage between them. But the earl had a wife Amy Robsart the daughter of a Norfolk squire who was habitating at Cumnor Place, three miles away from Oxford.

On Sunday the 8th of September 1560, Amy Robsart was suddenly and mysteriously found dead at the foot of the staircase. She was all alone, having sent all her servants to nearby Abingdon fair.

This incident was first brushed off as an accident and that there were no presumptions of evil, but very recent research proved that there were head injuries!

This makes compulsive reading. The more I delve into it, the more intriguing this chapter gets.

It would be brilliant if you could please make a movie of this interesting and unsolved tudor chapter. As for myself, I could help you provide with more information.

Wishing you a very happy 2011.

    Raja Velou

    rajavelou@yahoo.com

  11. i had referred to Amy Robsart in the first Elizabeth in dialogue by Norfolk accusing Dudley of betrayal to the Queen in an open court. And though we had shot a whole scene of her death, and the queen being told about it, the scenes ultimately did not make to the final cut of the film. Yes Amy’s death was a mystery with most of the suspicion falling on Dudley himself as she was becoming an awkward presence in his affair with the Queen. But there were also rumors of Cecil’s involvement to embarrass Dudley. After all if you were close to Power, then you had many enemies.

  12. Dear Shekhar

You kindly agreed to be interviewed for a BBC radio documentary I am producing about AR Rahman. I was due to be visiting India for this, but I am now interviewing him in LA instead.

Are you due to be in London again any time soon? Or LA? Or do you have any access to a recording studio where we could do an ISDN interview?

I would still really love to get your thoughts on Mr Rahman if at all possible.

Please do let me know, and I will arrange anything I can to make it happen.

    Many thanks

  17. Dear Mr. Kapur,
I’m a Professor at the University of Western Australia. I’m currently conducting research on a funded research project concerning Indian Cinemas of the 1970s and 1980s. As one strand of this project, I’m documenting particular filmmakers’ perspectives on their own work.

I’d be delighted if you’d consider contributing your expertise to my project, and grant me an email interview. If this is possible, I can email you further details of the project, specific questions I’d like answered, as well as my human research ethics consent form. I’m contactable at shalmalee.palekar@uwa.edu.au.

  19. Dear Shekhar

Last November, you kindly agreed to be interviewed for a BBC radio documentary I am producing about AR Rahman. At the time, I was planning a trip to India, and you asked me to contact you nearer the time. Unfortunately, I’m now not able to make that trip, but I would still really value your contribution if it was at all possible.

I am based in London, so wondered if either you would be back here anytime soon, or if we could arrange an ISDN interview, a local recording – anything which is convenient to you. I interviewed Mr Rahman in LA this week (I’m here until Sunday morning) and he was very complementary about you and your work. If there is any way we could make this happen, I would be thrilled.

    Many thanks

  21. Dear sir,

The students of BITS, Pilani – Dubai are organizing a one-of-its-kind Inter Institutional Technology Fest, ‘ENGINuity 2011’ on April 12 – 14, 2011 . This will be the third edition of this event, which is unique in being the only one of its kind at the university level in the whole of UAE. Considering this, the organisers hope to use ENGINuity as a platform on which both school and college students will be able to display their scientific temper through the course of competitions, workshops and lectures. Moreover, the organizers have chosen to structure the entire fest around the theme of ‘Innovation’, recognizing its extreme importance in today’s world.

We would be delighted to discuss with you the possibility of having you join our speaker lineup for our TEDxBITS-DUBAI conference.TEDx is our annual event where some of the world’s leading thinkers and doers are invited to share what they are most passionate about. “TED” stands for Technology, Entertainment, Design — three broad subject areas that are, collectively, shaping our future. And in fact, the event is broader still, showcasing ideas that matter in any discipline. Attendees have called it “the ultimate brain spa”. The diverse audience — CEOs, scientists, creatives, philanthropists — is almost as extraordinary as the speakers.

Your TEDx presentation should last just 18 minutes: long enough to say something of significance, but short enough to hold everyone’s attention and to be easily watched over the Internet.TED has never paid speakers to appear, but has always committed to creating an experience that’s tremendously fulfilling and beneficial on all sides, and as a TEDx event we plan to do the same.Event will cover speakers’ travel to and from from any airport and provide up to 3 nights of hotel accommodation.TED is owned by a not-for-profit foundation whose mission is simply to spread good ideas to the world. Much of the content ends up being offered free online. TED is also home of the famous TED Prize, which grants its winners a wish to change the world.

We hope that you will accept this humble invitation and consent to share some of your ideas with the students of the UAE.

    Thanking You.

  25. Dear Mr. Kapur,

I heard you speak recently at the Tie event in Delhi – it was an excellent and entertaining speech!

In that conversation, you mentioned a book on Gandhiji and India economy that I quote “could help explain why do we have given problems in India the way they are…”. You mentioned it to be a good read.

Since then I tried locating the book in South Delhi bookstores but haven’t found it and was wondering if you would kind enough to share its name here.

    Thanks in advance,
    Vikram

  31. Dear Mr Kapur

I have just listened to your TED talk about, “We are the stories we tell ourselves” which tied in with a thought I had the other day about movies. There are so many Western movies that fall into the 36 types pattern, but I have been trying to think about movies outside those patterns. My thought is that the world is ready for an unremittingly sad film without a happy ending. Perhaps in my limited experience such a film already exists but I have not seen it. What I do know is that such a film would have resonance with an immense number of people in the world. Not film for propaganda but film to capture an aspect of the human soul.

You must think me a malcontent without happiness in my life. Not so. I am probably happier now than at any time in the last 20 years – financially secure, loving family, nice home, interesting work. But I now have some time to think and that thinking leads me to thinking about the world, its people and the true potential of film which is so seldom realised.

Just a thought. If you do decide to make such a film I would be interested in being a part of it somehow or discussing the concept further.

    Best Regards,
    Gerald Neal
    Sydney, Australia

  32. stories don’t end, they raise larger issues and questions, they just a rhythm of a solving of one part of the plot – which in this case is the friendship between the two girls. Despite sexual awakening and jealousy, they realize they are tethered together to one shadow. The shadow defined as the water. For the rest of their lives they will walking to the well together and back everyday. They are enslaved by this existence, unless something changes. But the change they pray for could free their spirits, but could also being untold misery if the well dries up.

  36. Dear Shekar Kapur:

I am taking a shot at this and leave it to providence! Briefly, I am a poet by profession writing in English. I’ve read for the Sahitya Academy and my work is included in the upcoming Harper collins anthology of Indian English poets. I have completed what may be the first English musical on the life of Shirdi Sai. It has the flavor of a contemporary musical. A local dance company/school in Austin is interested in staging and producing it. I don’t know if it is ambitious to see this as a world production and see it on Broadway. I have no clue how to go about this. iI saw your name aligned with ‘Bomaby dreams.’ and took a chance.
