My recent book titled – ‘Victoria Gowramma: The Lost Princess of Coorg’ (Rupa Publications), is a true story about the daughter of the last raja of Coorg (Karnataka). The raja and his daughter were the first Indian royals to visit Victorian England in 1852. Queen Victoria was so taken up with Gowramma that she not only stood sponsor at her baptism but also adopted Gowramma as her goddaughter, and lent her name ‘Victoria’ to the eleven-year-old princess.
In 1854, the 16-year-old Maharaja Duleep Singh, who had already embraced Christianity, landed in England. Queen Victoria and Prince Albert indulged in ‘match-making’ between the two Christian Indian royals in the hope that this would encourage more such conversions amongst Indian royalties.
Other dramatis personae in this interesting saga are Lord Dalhousie, Jung Bahadur Rana of Nepal, Maharani Jindan Kaur, Sir John Login, Lady Lena Login, and Col. John Campbell.
After collecting details from a number of records of that period, I have reconstructed the hitherto untold story of Princess Victoria Gowramma on whom Queen Victoria showered unprecedented affection. The story involves colonial power, politics, religion, proselytization, greed, romance and disappointments.
I will be happy to reach a copy of the book to you to explore possibilities of recreating this historical episode.

Hello Shekhar,
I was reading in the Hollywood Reporter about your upcoming film “Panni” and tapping into consciousness for the betterment of humanity. Brilliant and very critical in this time.

We would very much love for you to come to the festival and share clips from Panni or have you involved in some other way that serves your needs.

Dear Shekhar,
I work at the Public Health Foundation of India, New Delhi as a Research Associate in Health Communications. We are technically supporting the National Mental Health Programme, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India to conduct a film festival on mental health- ‘Uniting Hearts and Minds’ in New Delhi on the 10-11th of October, 2011. This is part of a larger effort to reduce stigma and break the silence on mental illness, both of which have damaging consequences on persons living with mental illness and their families.
Were curious to know if you would be interested in joining as a key discussant in our quest to link cinema and emotion with a deeper understanding of mental health?
We would be very grateful if you could respond to us.
Thanks and regards,
Shivani

I am pretty keen to shoot a movie on Global Warming and i was expecting some participation from the NGO’s,i wrote them all but none of them came forward.I got 6 College level national awards for solo acting performances and script writing and street play direction. Now I earned few bucks and i am going to shoot this 10 minutes long short film but i am not sure what i am going to do after making it. I don’t have a clue where to submit it because with my efforts it can never reach to the masses but a better platform can make it to most of us. Because most of the social workers are not at all serious about this global warming situation.
sir please contact me or send your email id as i have different script for movies.thanks

A father threw his 10-month-old son to his death from the 14th floor of an apartment block in Shanghai’s Minhang District yesterday, police said.
Afterwards, the man, surnamed Zhu, tried to kill himself by cutting his wrists. He is recovering from his injuries in hospital.
Neighbors said Zhu, 29, and his wife, Wang, 28, were having “a fierce row” at about 3:40pm. Suddenly, the husband threw the baby out of the window, a witness said.
The mother rushed outside but could do nothing to save her child.
I came across this news by chance. I was stunned surprised, I had literally felt the earth move below me. I momentarily lost the track of time and surrounding. The mental image of the aftermath of the whole situation had affected me so deeply that nothing seemed important to me anymore. I could not concentrate on work for hours. My mind kept creating visual impression of the whole situation. I saw the miserable mother running through hallways screaming, praying & hoping for a miracle. She screamed so loud that all of her neighbors came out. Her screams grew bigger with every step towards her dying son. Finally, she approaches her son and finds him lying in a pool of blood. Clinging to a desperate hope of a miracle she leans down holds him, and wishes it all to be one of those lucid bad dreams which seem real.
By now the poor father snaps out of his anger and realizes what he has done. He realizes that he has gone way over the line and has lost everything to one moment of anger. The shocking realization of his stupidity suffocates him. An unbearable pain of regret hits him like a train. Shocked, Confuse, Depress and victim of his own dilemma, he decides to kill himself. He goes to the kitchen and cuts his wrist.
Anger is a very dangerous state of mind. Anger can easily turn into a brief madness if not dealt with. Above situation is a stunning example of anger taking over. The poor guy lost control, and a momentary anger brought him a life time of regret… uncontrolled anger lead killings have become very common in our society. It’s happening almost in every country… Especially in South Asia.
Question i keep asking myself!!
What causes anger in us and who is responsible for all the anger in our society? Could it be capitalism leading us to an unbalanced society?
Why are there so many people angry about all sorts of things out there? Could there be something terribly wrong with us?
The massacare of 1947… Was it pure hate Or anger taking over ?

Dear Shekhar ,
I have a Brilliant Piece Written by My Friend ABDUL MUNIM.You had earlier posted one of his Piece.
Please read this one:-
Corporate Slaves:—
I am Lost in the maze of regional rivalries.
Exploring the current political and social situation of the world is like putting your head into a washing machine. A lot has been written and said on this subject, but none of it makes sense to me.
Role of Media:
In the midst of regional economical rivalries fingers are pointed in all directions, no one seems to know what is going on. Mass media is feeding us with lies, lies and more lies. Shall we just blame the media and get our head out of the washing machine? (I tried, did not work) We can’t blame media for everything. Can we? Aren’t they on the same boat as us? The only difference is that they are self-deceived by their ignorance and our ignorance is influenced by them.
Political Capitalism:
Politics is a very dirty game. Perhaps we should blame politicians & diplomats and get on with our lives. (I tried, failed again) Well, there has always been crooked Politicians in the world. Whenever something goes wrong, our impulsive & collective ignorance leads us to blame them. And the real player and policy makers who fund and control the global political machinery stay hidden behind the scene.
Fears and desires are two sides of same coin:
We live in times where fear plays major role in reflecting and shaping our social values. We have been conditioned to accept fear in our lives. The fear of losing Job, The fear of losing our house, the fear of being rejected by others, the fear of not being able to provide for our family, the fear of not being able to live up to the expectation of others, All these fears is what shapes the course of our lives. We do everything possible to eliminate the fear factor from our lives and to protect our families. We lie for personal benefits. We adopt cunning strategies to compete with competitors. We make false assumptions to impress others. We don’t hesitate to pull someone’s leg for personal gains. We even use others as stepping stones to climb up the corporate ladder.
How our actions are different than a politician? One can debate that the effect of their political crimes is bigger than ours. So does the profits… Bigger the crime, bigger will be the reward. Crooked Political rulers are definitely part of the problem but they are not the problem. They are just sophisticated high level corporate slaves who have no power. They are only puppets being used and controlled by secretive oil companies and intelligence service of regional states.
corporatocracy:
It all boils down to handful of corporations who control 90% of worlds’ resources. They dominate every aspect of our lives. They own and control the governments (Check out the history of Last 10 American Presidents, They were all corporate executive at some point). They own some of the largest media outlets in the world and rest are influenced by their interests. They decide what we should eat, how we should dress, why we should go for wars and who we should war with. In short, it’s them who shape the reality of our future.
CAN WE BLAME CORPORATES?
Ant they simply doing what should be done to gain access to regional markets to secure more profits? Aren’t we all competing for power and wealth? How many of us don’t want our nation to be the most powerful nation in the world? How many of us actually realize that we are being conditioned on mass scale? How many of us want to accept that we are crammed into this rat maze only to become corporate tool for totalitarian enslavement.
Change the world by changing yourself:
How often do we think of helping others or about making a real contribution to society? Maybe most of us do a lot of thinking about it, but how many of us actually have the courage to do something about it? Imagine a slave standing up to his master when slavery was considered normal in our society. How would have people reacted in that period? Slave would probably be beaten or slaughtered…. And it will be considered normal. Now, imagine this happening today. NO YOU CAN’T? Slaves don’t exist anymore… Who do you think we are? Yes that’s exactly who we are, modern day corporate slaves. Waking up and standing against this slavery state NEEDS LOTS OF COURAGE. Do we have that courage?
Accept that we have a problem:
In the end, we have no one to blame but ourselves. We have two choices, we can either do something about it by denouncing the corporate enslavement or we can completely accept it. In my case I have no more courage left in me. I have given up to my fears and have accepted corporate slavery. And I know I am not the only one who has surrender to this conscious slavery. I am not the only one who has traded dreams with hopes. I am not the only one who has ceased to live for a better existence in a projected future. Society has programmed us all to submit to our greatest fears disguised in immense desires. It has become human nature to control the weak and take advantage of them. There is simply none to blame but us, our collective ignorance and greed has degraded and destroyed the basic sources of our life and has corrupted humanity.

Terror Belly !!
Once again on 13th July there were Bomb Blast in BOMBAY, Was it Some one from within the Society we belong , a common person, or a Political Party, Underworld, or Al Qaeda , Who did this?
That’s not important & This is not the Question we should ask,. The real Question is Why & How does it Happen Every now and then, Its just like a World Cup event, Which is for Sure to take place.
A Blast is always a GOOD NEWS for The Politicians, As they take this as Great opportunity to Gain mileage for the VOTES, Visit the Blast area, Go To Hospitals meet the Victims, Make promises & go back to their Lavish Houses with Z – Security, Do Traffic Jams in the City and nothing,
For INDIANS the Blasts has become so normal, Just like Brushing your teeth, taking shower everyday, Its no More a NEWS it’s a Part of our life. That’s a RUDE Reality
GOVT of India is to be blamed for this. No one else: Here is why I believe so: –
The Infrastructure of BOMBAY is as Such that it is easily possible for a Common Man to carry on such an attack or to plan and execute it. The Amount of People in BOMBAY are far too many, Makes it easier for attackers. And far more difficult for Authorities to Control such Attacks. BOMBAY is Just like Body with Low immunity, which is prone to all Kinds of disease.
The Only Solution is a Good Infrastructure of the WHOLE CITY. When you organize a City, Its manageable. We Pay hell lot of TAX, But What do we get? Pathetic Roads, Horrible Condition of the Whole City. Actually I can Go on and on about the City’s condition. People who live in Bombay or have been there know what I am trying to say.
Having a Clean & Organized city will definitely Help the People, Our People Deserve a Lot more. Its Our Right to have a City with International Standards. And in Any which way we need a good Infrastructure.
Why the attacks have not happened again in the US or UK ?
And Why does it keep happening in BOMBAY, KARACHI, KABUL? If you are Smart enough you will understand that We South Asians LACK the Infrastructure. And our GOVT’S Responsible. No BODY ELSE,
If the GOVT’S Don’t take any steps towards that direction, I can Guarantee that this shall never stop.
With good structure the Police, Intelligence will be able to work more efficiently.
It will Make a Way for Modern technology to come in & Monitor the Whole city. BOMBAY needs to be handled like a BIG Corporate, We need CEO, a Management team, Electronic ID’s for every Citizen, Very Important the waste Management Team and lots more.
We all need to Understand If we want our Country to be safe, We first need to Clean it, Organize it, It’s the mess which we Created is breeding the creatures which are Sucking our Blood now.
GOVT in India & Pakistan seems to HIDE the fact the our Infrastructure is one of the Biggest reasons behind the attacks. GOVT blame each others and take a slip as no one will Question them.
I Dream of a South Asia which will be reformed like CHINA. I wish Pakistan, Nepal, Afghan, Sri lanka & all our Neighbors work together to eradicate this disease and make Our Countries a Place to LIVE, Not to DIE.
Peace !!
Shekhar- i do have a very interesting script in mind that you can do justice to. How and where can i send you a brief synopsis so that it may be taken to the next level
Dear Shekharji,
Namastey.
How are U? I have come here as I have a film story for you so that we have a Nice Film for all of Us.
It has some idea taken from short stories of Sri Ravindra Nath Tagore and some practices still prevailing in “Katthiwara” block of Alirajpur disrict, M.P.
I have also imagined the title and main Cast of the story.
The Title is ” Bahut Dino Baad”
Cast: Sanjay Dutt, Rekha
The story goes like this…..
An adult girl gets married to a small boy of Age 7. Then as per the family ritual she takes care of him. Sending him to school, work, taking his studies and all the care what she can take. She teaches him a lot many skills and plays with him. Other boys in the school ask the boy ” Who is that beautiful lady at your home” The boy never knows. He comes and ask her. She says she will tell tomorrow. Like this many years pass. the boy grows into teens and again the same question arises in his mind.
She tells….she will tell him tomorrow…. Like this again many years pass. when the boy grows into a complete man…he asks the same thing to her and says if she doesnot answer he will die. She agrees to tell him who she is…and then the next day she prepares a delicious food for him, eats from his plate and ask him to wait for her in a well arranged bedroom. He waits….and she reaches to him but in the mid time some accident happens to the boy….and her wait for years for her husband gets prolonged…., the boy after recovering from illness starts seeing HER more than his Care taker. and slowly falls in love with her…..meanwhile his immature behaviour turns into a behaviour of a mature man…., he understands who she is……and the lady gets her husband after a long…long…prlonged wait.
When I read the stroy, i had three people in mind……Rekha, Sanjay Dutt and you.
If you give a thought to it….then we can dream of a nice film coming out of it.
Cheers!!!!

Hello Mr Kapur
I work on a blog on writing for Bollywood and as one of my all-time favourite filmmakers, it would be an honour if I might be able to get your thoughts. Would it be possible to send you some questions by email? Please let me know.
I look forward to hearing from you,
Shai Hussain
Dear Mr Kapur
I’ve not had any further insights into making an unremittingly sad movie, but looking at the comments in this web site I imagine that you must feel like a potato chip or french fry surrounded by hungry sea gulls. All of them pecking at you and wanting something. That is very sad.
So instead of asking you for something I will tell you a sad story. My daughter is in year 6 and one of the big events of the school each year is the Night of the Notables, where the children investigate someone who has done a worthy thing, like starting a charity, or inventing something worthwhile, or helping people in some way. This year my daughter (age 11) ever so much wanted to be Audrey Hepburn and luckily she was chosen for that notable. After a great amount of preparation (weeks! my young one must have spent 60 hours or more on the project) the night came and she dressed up like Breakfast at Tiffany’s (darling!) and she presented the charity work that Ms Hepburn had done for UNICEF in Africa. The night was a success, she was one of the best presenters (in the top 2 or 3). So for my daughter it was a great success.
The next day my eldest daughter (16) mentioned this in passing to her friends at her high school and they all asked, “Who is Audrey Hepburn?”
For a lady of such charm and grace, a women voted the most beautiful woman of the 20th century, who made such memorable movies like Roman Holiday, My Fair Lady and my favourite Two for the Road, who made you smile just to look at her – to be so quickly forgotten by the younger generation and, really, the older generation too.
My eldest favourite movie at the moment is Gone With the Wind and none of her friends have even heard of it! Not an Audrey Hepburn movie I know, but certainly a classic!
I must be getting old – it bothers me that such loveliness as Ms Hepburn can be so quickly forgotten.
It is not like we are living in a vacuum – we are in Sydney, Australia for goodness sake and living in one of the nicest parts. The people in this are are well off, travel a great deal, have expensive cars, houses – consider themselves well educated – and yet somehow the conversation or experience of watching one of the most charming actresses of the 20th century never arises in 16 years.
It makes me wonder what is important.
Yours thoughtfully,
Gerald

Dear Shekhar,
I am a great fan of you and your films. I admire and appreciate your work in Hollywood like Elizabeth. I would really love to watch a Hollywood movie directed / produced by you on Mahabharta epic. It would be a block buster HollyWood Movie like Lord Of Rings sequel or Harry Potter Sequel. I would like to know, your opinion on making such a sequel on Mahabharta.
Thanks
Rahul Phadnis
Dear Shri Shekhar ji:
We sincerely thank you for opening supporting the Anna Hazare movement in India.
God Bless You!

God of Small Criticisms
The greatest achievement of Anna Hazare movement is that India finally got rid of West-influenced; English-speaking activists such as Arundhati Roy from the traditional leadership role of people’s movements. Arundhati Roy criticises Kabir for accepting financial support from the Ford Foundation while forgetting the fact she was an integral part of the organising committee of World Social Forum in India sponsored the very same funding-agency.
If Anna has managed to unite the entire nation in less than thirty days, it is simply because he spoke the language of the ordinary Indians, not the language of the elite and the affluent class of this country. English was replaced with Hindi; babus with activists, hypocrisy with simplicity; cowardice with courage and finally words with action. Victory or failure is not very important in struggles for the goodness of a nation.

I am working on a very interesting story that includes england in the age of Shakespeare and India in the days of the Mughals (ie early 17th century).

Dear Sir,
I am a screenplay writer and I wish to work with you. Is that possible ever?
Gauri
Dear Shekhar,
I have always looked up to you as one of the the enlightened ersonalities in our country committed to bring positive and revolutionary changes in the society. I would like to present such a revolutionary concept ” Yes we can India…let’s do it NOW! ” which I strongly feel can bring a much needed change in our society. I would like your support and feedback on how to make this idea work. We can launch a nationwide campaign to create a force that would change India forever.
I would like to add that it is through meditation that I have been able to connect to my inner God-self who literally guided me to write this concept. I do realize that I am just a channel of that infinite wisdom flowing through all of us and feel an urgent need to reach out to other enlightened souls for guidance and support. I would really appreciate if you could spare some time and read the plan.

I have created a blog with the ideas that my divine self has directed through me and I would be really happy if you could check it out and give your valuable suggestions.
Pl check the blog http://yeswecanindia.wordpress.com
Here are some lines from the blog :
Be the change you want to see in the world…..Mahatma Gandhi
Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has….Margaret Mead
From revolution to conscious evolution
Yes we can make a difference if united. Yes we can India……let’s do it NOW!
The idea of a free India ….free of corruption, poverty, violence, communalism, terrorism, unemployment, illiteracy is the dream of every Indian and we have the power to make it true …
Team India….an idea whose time has come!
Vow! the current revolution was mind blowing but the question is can we let this glorious opportunity pass as an uni-dimensional revolution or should we take the bull by the horns and get together to come up with multi dimensional approach in form of effective strategies, action and implementation plans to eradicate the monsters of corruption, poverty, illiteracy, unhygienic conditions, poor infrastructure, communalism, unemployment etc eating our country for once and all?
Yes, indeed revolution is good. Anything that asks for a change – a fundamental change- any adversity that comes to shake our base is an opportunity to rule out what is not working and start all over again with a sound foundation for a sound outcome – it is a call to let go the past and grow a new future…..better, brighter with the experiences, inventions, discoveries, technology advancements our race has acquired. We have the best of means and tools to choose and create the best. Today we are a step away from making the changes for betterment of our entire country.History has witnessed whenever a courageous mind stood up and took cudgel for all that is right and just ,all the universal forces have come to pave the path for him be it M Gandhi, Mandela, Lincon, Anna or anyone with a genuine cause to make the whole world a better place!Frankly, there is nothing that we, the people of India or shall we call it the “team India” can not do. What is that we lack – Resources? Manpower? Ideas? Strategies? Solutions? Action? Means? Tools? No! We just lack a strong will…..a collective will to make things work as we want!! We have the best brains on the whole planet, biggest manpower resources, media, information technology everything that we require to create a country free of corruption, poverty, illiteracy, unemployment, and communalism anything!
The quantum physics’ theory of critical mass and phase transition is a well known phenomenon for example when the number of atoms lining up in phase with each other reaches a certain critical mass, there’s a phase transition and suddenly all of the light becomes coherent. This is what creates laser light—a sudden phase transition in which a few atoms, reaching a certain threshold or critical mass; influence all of the atoms to line up in a coherent, powerful pattern. Similarly “collective transformation” would occur when a “critical mass” of “individuals align to create a change in the society. As individuals change, eventually a critical mass of people will be reached and the whole society will have a new, effective way of doing things or in other words when enough individual people share the objectives and beliefs, a critical mass will be reached which will create a force field of such intensity that everyone in society will share this belief.
“Yes we can” is such a belief which can change our country if applied effectively. We, the people of India share the same vision, the same idea, the same belief of a free India, a prosperous India free of corruption, poverty, violence, communalism, terrorism, unemployment, illiteracy etc. We all dream of a developed India with a booming economy, sound infrastructure, food and social and national security.
just visited your website Preeti, and agree with what I read.

and JINDAN, “The Woman who Terrified the British Empire”

You’re missing the Big Picture!!!! Look deeper. Why was Gowramma murdered,
after Jindan, Login, and along with her husband?
The purpose of ‘kidnapping’ Duleep, and arranging his marriage to his cousin Victoria
Gowramma, was to Christianize India … But destiny prevailed, as Duleep found Bamba,
his devoted wife in Egypt …
I suggest you read ‘The Maharaja’s Box’, ‘Duleep Singh Sovereign, Squire & Rebel’
“Flashman & The Mountain of Light’, and “The Woman who Terrified the British Empire, who’s
