As the most important annual networking weekend between business, economic policy makers, bankers and politics ? Yes, Davos is unbeatable. But to be touted as the place where people get together to solve the economic problems of the World is a little silly. Most of the people attending caused the ecomonic problems of the world.
The people attending the forum are much more interested in solving their own economic problems, their own balance sheets, their own positions of political power. There is nothing wrong with that. It’s how the world exists and business is done. However the assumptions that in solving their own problems effectively provides solutions to the problems of the rest of the planet is completely false. 90% of the people of the World are irrelevant to Davos, except as perhaps potential markets.
There’s is a wrong view of the world economy. We can no longer live in isolated oasis of economic prosperity dotted around the planet in an overpowering sea of poverty. Globalization has made sure that social strife too is an exportable commodity much more than it was a decade ago. The movers and shakers at Davos should think about that as they clink their Champagne glasses over their deals.
They should also know that all the economists, bankers, political and business leaders concentrated in that little village this weekend have consistently got it wrong. That is because that the harsh truth is – that creating the economic reforms that the world really needs will erode the power and business base of the very people making the decisions at Davos. Highly unlikely they will do that.
Though your thoughts are debatable, but then it’s also true that Charity begins at home:). Maybe all the business honchos sitting their realize not to make the mistakes they did all these days are not repeated and also look at long terms prospects rather than the short term achievements.
can’t agree more. What about creating alternate Davos consisting of smaller enterpreneurs that are addressing bigger problems than Davos can ever do in it’s life time.
God made planets, Men made currencies.
Well said.
your blog is becoming an addiction.
i am sort of an insider. i had a stint at IBanking once and work for a very big MNC that is trying to get the laws changed in its favor. The fact is that I really believed in all what I learnt at MBA. When I was told things like reducing the import tariff on Mercedes would somehow trickle to the poorest, I believed. My views started changing once I started being parts of corporate discussions and saw how mediocre, self-centered and, of course, greedy some of my heroes were. Some — not all.
Art was also an element of change. I discovered it very late in life and started having doubts.
I still believe in bits of what I do. but it’s not only the ascendancy of only the interests of the champagne-clinking elite on third-world nations is that I fear. I also fear the monoculture that it is trying to breed across to run its mighty consumerist engines; and that we are fast losing the diversities that the early century explorers had so gushed over.

Hello
Bye
Who do you think should atend this forum then??
Shekharji,
Few years ago I have saw a movie “Minority Reports.”, directed by Steven Spelberg and I am going to narrat the storyline below.
Some people have intiution powrs to see the future. They have kept under a high security cell and connected with the mechnism so that their futuristic visions should be recorded. They did it all to avoid and cantrol the crime wich will going to happens in future.
This is purely western approach towards the things. They try to develope a procidure through which even spirituality should be moulded and laboured hardly for social benefits.
And the whole estern approach is creating a social arrangement so that many many people could realise their real self.
So who should be handled whome ? Which is more better ?
Likening Davos WEF to countries -the simile would be: USA and EU congregation leading the way at the head of table. With smaller / developing countries filling up the rest of the length of the table:) So, it is the place to go network with heads of corporates, hob nob and schmooze with each other, come away a few dollars lighter:)
Damn I was going to buy a new Hummer in late 2012 and drive around the country for a vacation, Now I am going to have to shave my head and join the Hari.s, Muslims, Jews, Jehovah s, Mormons, Christians, and a few other wing nut groups just to cover all my bases.
2012 end of world
– some truth about 2012
