“One of the most moving songs of all time. It was the first sad song that I became aware of as a very young child. I witnessed a real life situation in which two brothers had a fight. A few days later,the younger brother left the home forever, never to return. He had left a note informing his elder brother about his decision. The note also contained words of this song- “chal ud ja re panchi ke ab ye desh hua began..” Whenever I hear this song, I am reminded of that real life incident.
Coming to this song itself, It is a song that I find the most moving. The feelings of getting uprooted from familiar surroundings, because you no longer belong- this is such a feeling that words will fail the most expressive souls, but kudos to Rajinder Krishan, that he came up with perfect lyrics for the situation.
Chitragupta, who rarely got the opportunity to work in A grade movies ( even this movie was not an A grade movie) gatecrashed into the party of A grade music directors with this song, even if momentarily.
And how can one describe the voice of Rafi ? If I have to choose just one song of Rafi to listen to, this will have to be that song. One can see that he sang ths song with true feeling. Little wonder, that this song continues to move any person who is emotionally moveable.”
