The Indian people deserve better

No wonder Indians do so well when they move overseas. Look at the odds they have to overcome just to survive in their own nation. If they are not constantly fighting bureaucracy, corruption, lack of basic health, education, the state is unable to even protect their lives against acts of terrorism. Isn’t it time that the people forced the politician to overcome their obsession with their own power, greed and criminal irresponsibility ? Is it not time for the people to hold the politicians accountable ? The state is as responsible for these acts of terrorism as the terrorists themselves.

  1. IN CANNES
    Dear Shekhar,
Hope you are well and I just arrived in Cannes for what appears to be one of the best festival in years with even Spielberg attending this year. And the first news I read is of Jaipur, a great peaceful city and these events for no reason. I think the reason Indians do well overseas is because they realize that this is there rare opportunity and that they should make the best of it, so they work harder there and also follow the rules better. Now I am gettng $6K per month in Hyderabad which is quite good in India but the main reason of that is because I previously had an American job that paid more than that as well as a US MBA. Sitting here this morning in this amazingly pretty location, all things look wonderful – today evening I am going to see the premiere of the movie ‘Blindness’ by Fernando Meirelles, which is the opening night film.
I have come with many professional aspirations here and I hope some get fulfilled.
    Best Regards,
    Himanshu

  2. Thanks to consecutive weak governments and weak leaders, India has established itself as a WEAK STATE in the eyes of the whole world. Any Tom, Dick and Harry can come and spit on our face and we’ll just stand there doing nothing! Would you believe that India has been a victim of such Terror attacks for the last many years and NOT ONE of these cases have been solved. In not even a single case have our investigative agencies reached the MASTERMINDS behind the attacks. Leave alone punishing the Masterminds behind such attacks, our incompetent investigative agencies have not even been able to identify them. HOW UTTERLY SHAMEFUL! That’s why people are right when they want Narendra Modi to become the next Prime Minister of the country. Out of the utterly shameful list of leaders we have in the country (across all parties), only Narendra Modi is capable of teaching these terrorists a lesson.
    Cheers!

  3. If we compare the terror attacks in India and US, we feel even more ashamed of our politicians — the so called leaders…
After 9/11 in the US the terrorists were not allowed to enter the country …leave alone cause any further casualty..
But in India almost every year we have a major terror attack and in most cases we are not able to trace the perpetrators of the crime, leave alone punishing them…
The police and politicians are happy and pat their backs for just finding the organisation responsible(like HuJI and SIMI in the Jaipur case)and giving a paltry sum of money as a relief measure to the victims…
They do almost nothing for improving our ‘Intelligence’ services and preventing such attacks from happening with religious regularity.
Every year so many innocent Indians die due to terrorism but the government shamelessly declares that “Indians are resilient people and can bravely face any threat” .There is no value of the life of any Indian..
As opposed to this in US they care for each and every citizen of their country …
Its high time our authorities wake up from their deep slumber and take stringent measures to nip the evil in the bud otherwise no one can prevent Kashmir like situation happening in various parts of our country.
And our enemies our always ready to add fuel to the fire as is evident by the activities happening on our borders from the past couple of weeks..
We have to have a strong government,a visionary leader for whom the dignity of the country and its citizens is of prime importance and not selfish self-centered peolple who enjoy power to the hilt but do nothing constructive for the country.

  4. Unless we are weak from inside no one can hurt us. The system that we believe in makes us strong. Every single person is responsible for making it better. Now when I read your statement, it help me to reach a conclusion that if I want to be a successful person, I must look for other countries which provide me better opportunity. Don’t get me wrong here, it is true that Indians do very well when they are overseas. But when do start believing we can change things here itself. Anyway people go out but they return also, most of the time it happens when a couple has their 1st baby. May be because they can’t see there children adapting to foreign culture. Second thing is that you have started a blame game on politicians. Now how different you are from Vijay mallaya. If a thing goes wrong we look for people or condition that can be blamed. There were politicians who really worked for growth of the country.
We have been thought that we must focus on the aim that we have set for our self. Same as Arjun set his concentration on the eye of the fish. Well this is very much acceptable. But do we really care for the path which we take to accomplish our aim. All the big business houses have exploited the weakness of the system. Or they accepted the system as it is. In other words they made it flourish. Now these business houses employ millions of people. We proudly tell their success story. In other words we tell people that they must search for whatever way to there aim.
I can remember only one such person who was worried about the path that we must walk. His name was Gandhi. Imagine if we have obtained our freedom through violence. Even if we have got our freedom from Britishers, how long it will take for us to be free from anger and hatred that we have practiced so hard in our mind. I remember the time when I was in 2nd class I used to change the numbers solving the math problem. So my answer was always wrong but still I used to get some marks because my method was correct.
All the anti social activities are actually the testing time for the system that we believe in. The system must be able to adapt itself to the changing times. Every individual is important and has a unique role to play in the system.
“Zindagi jeene ke do tarike hote hai, ek to jo kuch ho raha hai usse bardasht karte jao ya phir usse badlne ki zimmedari uthao “
Good one, but how it can be decided what type of change must follow ?????

  5. Very true Shekhar..for once I totally and fully agree with your views! 🙂
In fact I read couple of good signboards at nariman point..let me quote for you
    1. Lets get cheer-leaders to Parliament….to improve attendance
    2. Mr. Gore, global warming cannot kill us, curropt politicians will!
    3. Lets put our politicians for auction (refering to T20 player auctions)….Sorry…NO TAKERS!
If these overweight, selfish stooges continue to rule us….then even God cannot help us…what say Shekhar?

  6. Shekhar ji…now that is a very broad and sweeping statement! If you really look around in India, a revolution has happened in India in the past ten – fifteen years in termes of standards of living and opportunites available.
In contrast our bureaucracy and legal system has remained fossilized. SO the basic problem remains wherever there is state control; not in areas where the Indian state is promoting free enterprise. Maybe we need to redefine the rule of the Indian state. As a faclitator to promote good governance and economic growth and not as a killer of dreams.
And most of all we need a huge huge revolution in our courts and judicial system; In case the courts were to set an example by punishing just ten most corrupt politicians to life terms, the revolution would get ignited. Youth on this globe follow role models; so if society leaders are corrupt, communal and decadent… the youth get an idea on which side the bread is buttered.
But the sad fact is that our legal system is paralysed! None of the powerful and corrupt ever get punished. We might be the only country in the world, where courts have a summer vacation, inspite of a million pending cases. At the end of the day, is our legal system a means for lawyers to earn huge money or is it a channel for Indians to get justice?
Seems lawyers are the only winners in this arguement.
So inspite of haveing a few lawyers among my best friends, I would say that we need to evolve a system where, lawyers get punished in case the delay justice by creating false witnesses and delaying cases. Or helping their clients in fabricating false evidence. And also evolving a system where a case can be decided in three- four months and not thirty years as it is now.
Well let us all start dreaming now….

  7. Hiya Shekhar…
Gosh was so numb lost track of all this
    .
    .
I would say, the rich and the powerful are the ones who move the tables around in politics, hence this brilliant power is with them…of fighting against it all
    .
    .
the poor are so lost in fighting for their basic needs, that they dont care whats happening
    .
    .
where is the energy to stand up and cleanse the system
    .
    .
the only way wud be for the powerful to stand up and lead the weaker..to bring changes
    .
    .
team spirit will balance this problem, the poor and the weak can give strength as of in unity…but we need good commanding and not demanding leaders
    .
    .
    And alas!!
The powerful ones make a puppetry out of thier powers…they barely see beyond their selfish needs…if they dont, how will they be termed as powerful?
    Ruthless vicious cycle…
    .
    .
    I need a Hug!!

  8. Let me be honest
    .
    .
Shekhar you have seen wealth you have seen power you have seen stardom you have seen victory you have seen loss, you have seen the world
    .
    .
Would you stand up to lead our country in any manner
    .
    .
Yes you collect funds you try in various parameters
    .
    .
But we need stable balanced leaders
    .
    .
    Can you rise above?
    .
    .
You have it in you…the method, the vision, the questions, the solutions
    .
    .
    Would you not rise?
    .
    .
Be the answer not the question?
    .
    .
Uhu mujeh hug chahiye…dene ko kuch nai hai ab!!

    .
    This is for you sanjay…
You rightly talk of our judicial system
    .
    .
    what say of?
    .
    .
Hospitals? (Rich worms eroding bodies of the rich only)
    Schools?(under rich/politicians)
    Univerisities? (Under the rich/politicians)
    Police (puppets of politicians/rich people)
Army (mere puppets under politicians, who will ask them their suffering?)
    etc etc etc
    .
    .
    etc
    etc
    .
    etc
    .
    .
    each system needs cleansing….
    .
    .
    We are running blindly ahead
    .
    .
Not looking back that we are standing on rubbles of the sufferers
    .
    .
A lawyer could be a patient, a police can be a victim…its a circle, we all need each aspect…hence the problem is as huge as our country and it keeps adding up…
    .
    .
Growth while balancing and taking charge of the foundation, not eroding it
    .
    .
neev pakki ho tho imarat oonchi hoti hai…

    JANTA!!
Why will janta die…because they are slowly giving up and permitting themselves to be trodden, now only saviours in form of strong leaders, with balance and conviction and dedication, can take charge of it
    .
    .
    Gandhi said non violence
    .
    .
we were left with a disease called divide and rule by the britishers…
    .
    .
And this disease still persists not because the english left it for us but because we found it very convenient, and still use it as a weapon
    .
    .
our religion, our caste, divided states etc etc etc.
    .
    .
this is the strongest weapon used by our politicians!!
    .
    .
Now where do we find sane. level headed characters?
    .
    .
Gandhi was a result of we the people of india
    .
    .
WE CHOSE HIM…WE RAISED HIM… HE WAS BECAUSE OF US, WE WERE NOT BECAUSE OF HIM!!!!!!
    .
    .
SO WE NEED TO CHOSE SOMEONE/FOLKS… AND FILL OUR VOICES AND STRENGTH IN HIM/HER!!!
Allow me to say I have not read history beyond level 10 of school.
Whatever I could percieve of Gandhi and our situation I choose to express!!
    Adieu!!

  11. hi shekhar !
if these terrorists trained their guns on politicians instead of the poor innocent masses they could actually become national heroes who operate intelligently instead of demented reactionaries………?

  12. Dear Shekhar,
Blindness was one truly amazing and most unusual film I saw yesterday where a whole city goes blind. Among the Bollywood folks I saw on the theater were Amitabh Bachchan, Abhishek and Aishwarya, Vidhu Vinod Chopra and his wife Anupama and the opening film truly lived to it’s class.
Sometimes when you are in certain parts of the world like I am right now, one can’t imagine that there can be poverty anywhere and that there are wars going on elsewhere. I guess this lack of realization of the problems/proximity of the issues all over the world prevent the richer nations to take immediate action to remedy that, and secondly if it’s not your problem you don’t do anything about it.
India’s problems like food, raising the per capita income and education level, as well as preventing terrorism have to be dealt with internally and urgently. Like Shekhar said we should get the military involved, and deal with cross border terrorism with certainity, even if we have to take POK and destroy all camps where these people are trained, and if we have traitors inside we have to give them the strongest and fastest punishment under TADA, not cases running 15yrs. We have the organization and resources to do it – just needs focus from the top. It seems it is not that big of a issue at PMO – whereas in the US it is everything, the main issue that even won the republicans the elections, and may yet be a big divider.
    Best Regards,
    Himanshu – Cannes

  13. The Constitution of India is written in English. For a society to progress the Society should first understand it’s own democracy.. With millions of people not educated and the ones who are do not understand the basics of their democracy so the quality of life is exactly what’s happening run by Goonda Raj…
Your own Bollywood movies propagated many movies depicting Police as arriving late and not providing justice.. Your own bollywood should Police as Incompetant and a Amitabh or a Rajnikant bashing 17 goondas at a time and providing justice on the spot.. I thought Bollywood was a escape from reality, then Why Market the Incompetance of the the Police for decades in movies…
Almost 12 standard failed people go for studying Law.. Not a Single Tare Zmeen Par covering this ANGLE… Just listen the the US Supreme court Arguments on NPR.ORG Its a tremendous thought process and courage that goes into interpreting laws.
Hinglish (English as second language) speaking Indians don’t even properly understand normal English forger about Legal English…
Can a country provide justice which is armed with a DEMOCRACY that is written in an Alein language not understood by Masses?
You are an Economist, So here is a question for an analytical mind…
Let’s say if a common man in India wants to fight for justice against Reliance Industries, Does the Legal Infrastructure in India has the capacity to Provide Justice to this person?
Or does a RGV kinda Goonda justice is the only option left in India?
Is prosparity caused just by Productivity or does it also require a legal infrastructure so that it can be distributed to the remotest corner of a society?
    I rest my case…

  14. I have a different view of this!!!Indians are sharka…read the analogy.
The Japanese have always loved fresh fish. But the waters close to Japan have not held many fish for decades. So to feed the Japanese population, fishing boats got bigger and went farther than ever. The farther the fishermen went, the longer it took to bring in the fish. If the return trip took more than a few days, the fish were not fresh. The Japanese did not like the taste.
To solve this problem, fishing companies installed freezers on their boats. They would catch the fish and freeze them at sea.Freezers allowed the boats to go farther and stay longer. However, the Japanese could taste the difference between fresh and frozen and they did not like frozen fish. The> frozen fish brought lower price. So fishing companies installed fish tanks. They would catch the fish and stuff them in the tanks. After a little thrashing around, the fish stopped moving. They were tired and dull, but alive.
Unfortunately, the Japanese could still taste the difference.Because the fish did not move for days, they lost their fresh-fish taste. The Japanese preferred the lively taste of fresh fish, not sluggish fish. So how did Japanese fishing companies solve this problem? How do they get fresh-tasting fish to Japan?
If you were consulting the fish industry, what would you recommend? As soon as you reach your goals, such as finding a wonderful mate, starting a successful company, paying off your debts or whatever, you might lose your passion. You don’t need to work so hard so you relax. You experience the same problem as lottery winners who waste their money, wealthy heirs who never grow up and bored homemakers who get addicted to prescription drugs.
Like the Japanese fish problem, the best solution is simple. It was observed by L. Ron Hubbard in the early 1950’s. “Man thrives, oddly enough, only in the presence of a challenging environment”.
The more intelligent, persistent and competent you are, the more you enjoy a good problem. If your challenges are the correct size, and if you are steadily conquering those challenges, you are happy. You think of your challenges and get energized. You are excited to try new solutions. You have fun. You are alive!
To keep the fish tasting fresh, the Japanese fishing companies still put the fish in the tanks. But now they add a small shark to each
tank. The shark eats a few fish, but most of the fish arrive in a very lively state. The fish are challenged.
The next logical question is “What keeps the sharks alive?”
Sharks have to keep swimming just to stay alive, as they have no air bladders…other fishes do!!!

  15. India lacks direction. It lacks direction because it could never stick to an ideology for the lack of convictions.
The natural result is corruption and further degeneration.
If someone were to ask me the most fundamental problem in India, I would say it is the lack of right morals, those who could sustain them have done well, those who did not either got lucky or manipulative. Who but an individual can correct it?
