Do we have to slow poison our kids ?

No, for once I am not talking about the effects of global warming and the retreating glaciers. I am talking about something that is far far easier to control if we had the will to it.
With diabetes becoming an epidemic in urban India ( India is the diabetic capital of the world) and more and more kids being prone to the disease, surely it time to check the rampant advertising that comes on TV that tries to drive kids to stop eating fresh foods, but those foods that use chemicals to provoke the taste buds in children – fooling the body into believing those foods are good for them. The overheated and chemically created snacks, chocolate bars, breakfast foods, noodles and chips, ice creams that are made of the same chemicals and fats that detergents are made of, etc are slow poison not only because of the chemicals and fats they contain, but also because of they are replacing natural foods.
Commercials on TV are designed by experts that are very good at driving child psychology. Especially as the child’s mind is the most vulnerable of them all. If smoking and alcohol ads are banned, then surely we should look at ads that encourage eating habits that lead to diseases in children ?
I wonder how many parents would allow their kids to eat a packet of chemically laden snacks, if the the packet said in clear bold letters ” This food could lead to chemical imbalances in your child that could lead to diabetes”

  1. I know. I am 25 and I am more diabetic than my dad. I eat like a normal person of my age. But I am cursed with this disease which has changed life for me drastically. I cant have a KFC burger now devoid of the tension.. My mom has become Hitler when it comes to food ….
I wish I didnt have this awful disease…

  2. Hi Shekhar…
I sometimes am lead to believe that parents are giving a blind eye…its easier for them to feed them this crap than to make efforts to raise a voice or stop treating thier kids with such rubbish at an early age…as this category of taste is formed in childhood….
    .
is crying abt advertisement the ‘core’ factor of such problems?
    .
but then when I think of good food too…where can one find it I wonder?
    .
    Chemically injected fruits?
some weird technology of having some kind of fast grown vegetables?
    Chemically packed foods?
Juices that swear that they are 100% pure no pesticides or whatever, freeks name it what all rubbish they write on these packs
    .
where as we all know…any packed food in todays date looses its food values and infact mingles with various chemicals of packaging n causes more of toxins to form….
    .
Im afraid, end of the day folks in villages who have their hands on fresh food of their feilds/gardens will be more healthier….if not modern….
    .
    If this is modernisation
    .
    Well…what do I say…
    .
Even Nestle company is playing havoc with our diet in India…throwing rubbish on us that aint working in their country…
    .
first it was throwing their garbage here….as of in cars and machines…
    then now comes food
I hope we dont give them more reasons to even transfer their ‘Poop’ under some business proposal with India in the name of Global Economy…
    .
    Ha Ha!
    EEw
Bann such category of advertisements….who will raise their voice? too busy hai na?
Zindagi mei aur bhi bahut kaam hai aise sur dard ke ilaava….
    .
In india parents make puppets out of their children hence these sweet little puppets cant raise their voices if parents cant…hai na?

  3. Hi,

  4. Shekhar Aap iss position mein hai…
    Ki
    .
A channel should be open or rather it should become a core serial of main tv….
    .
where folks/children/adults/everyone is educated made aware on some or the other problem
    .
be it health, food, law, old age, loans, ideas, creativity, sex, pregnancy, love, romance, careers, citizen rights, education so many issues one can pick up…educating them creating awareness without making it dillute with some drama of advertisement or money making racket or fame
    .
    Straight from the ‘Horses’ mouth….
    .
Me thinks the biggest hit of this channel would be if Saas n bahus were educated how to live together if they have to…without making their children a weapon to get even with each other, respecting each others individuality, giving space and honour of decision making, not dictating…aww soo much shekhar…dekho tho sOOoo much to express
    .
    Shucks!!

  5. Dear
    *Entertainment blog india*
    .
Sure you are right why should the kids not be a focus? why not in the name of giving them entertainment inject slow poison in their minds n need too huh????
    .
Me thinks, kids really dont need all this created garbage of tv….
    .
If they were not made couch potatoes along with poisoned food shoved down their minds and gullet…
    .
They would have more time for creativity within themselves…they would learn interactions with other kids apart from school, creative playing, stimulating activity in the real sense…
    .
not stimulating their innocent minds, and stimulating them towards death of this order…where life is not normal
    .
    sure why not
    .
Im ready to hear tv serial makers now start screaming if these product advts r banned who will watch our programmes our creativity huh????

  6. Dear Shekhar
You always bring out interesting subject on your blog!
Food well, we are what we eat. I remember being astouned when
going to India and tasting the most delicious food from variety of vegetables and grains depending in which part of the country I also remember early morning eating simple fresh food cooked in the village and slowly see improvement in my skin and my energy rising from the change of diet because when you start your morning with bred or bagel in New York that’s just dead food. I had to really pay close attention to my child while she grew up in New York as every delhi or big store has their “candy, chocolate bar etc… “ placed directly low enough that a 5 years old can reach out to them which was not the case in France where I grew up. As you know in the United state they suffer tremendously of overweight problem as well as kids with hyper activity problems But when you take one quick look at what a small child in a lower middle class is given to eat in the morning cereal filled with sugar soda filled with sugar snacks filled with sugar…… It looks like now a lot of those product are reaching the shelves of certain cities in India and that more and more advertising is reaching people’s home with those product that in no way are good for any of us but certainly our kids should stay away from.
It is sad to think that your country that has an amazing variety of food that is so healthy is slowly being polluted by these product that are highly unhealthy and just being sold not for our health but for money. It is good that someone like you raises this subject….. And it is also wise for people to understand their responsibility towards these product as one has to remember that if we don’t buy these then there will be no market for it!

  8. The tone in which you advocate caution against artificially manufactured foods begs provokes this doubt in me – where do you draw the line? I think the whole discussion boils down to this age old but profound question which needs good research to answer. But then the vicious cycle is again set.Claims by competing companies (sometimes untenable) –> expert psychologists –> Ads..huh.

  9. Dear Shekhar:
I don’t believe Don Quijote’s quest to conquer windmills was any more hopeless than the attempt to stop the juggernaut of commercial enterprise which has no soul or any conscience. India is in the clutches of capitalism and consumption mania. The people who ignore the warnings of dire consequences that smoking engender are the same who allow their children to eat sweets and drink coke. I doubt that packets with similar warnings would elicit enough concern and fear among parents to create a significant current of awareness. Children more often than not buy these products themselves and would probably pay very little heed to printed caveats. Aside of all this the manufacturers of these consumer items would try to pull every string available to scare a corrupt political establishment away from creating impediments to their greed and profiteering obsession.
India would need a Ralph Nader figure who provides the impetus to a grass-roots movement, a figure who by virtue of a total absence of ulterior motives can cause a groundswell of awareness and establish a power that will be taken seriously by an industry that has lost its moral compass by luring and baiting a young, vulnerable and impressionable segment of society that has little desire to listen to the warnings of adults.
If an Indian Nader materializes it will still not be a short road with quick results around the corner. However, there is hope. Nader was able to force the U.S. Congress into the passage of the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act rather rapidly. Other legislation followed that curtailed the excesses and unsafe practices of the pharmaceutical industry and to keep the Food and Drug Administration more honest. One man, a Gandhi-like figure, could inspire legions of activists to follow suit and to create a force in consumer protection that the political establishment can no longer ignore.
I believe, there is such a man in your country. Now is the time for him to throw down the gauntlet.
    With kind regards.
    Horst

  10. Part of the reason for the big D is genetic and all the fruits and sprouts won’t help– I should know.
But yes, darn tough for parents to insist on dal-chawal- sabzi- roti when the media overdoses our senses with pizza, cola and chips.

  11. I wants to tell something for your title that”Do we have to slow poison our kids ?”
Ya T.V. and computer is like slow poison for our childrens because by showing the t.v. our children could not go out side and they did not know what happnes in world around them?

  12. This issue is too vast,
It just can’t be focused to a particular disease…thare are many orders of diseases associated with advts…the way they go about….along with tv
    .
    .
    Obesity
    .
    lack of interaction
    .
    lack of creativity from within
    .
    escapism
    .
if a child has a problem it can never be noticed the way they go about watching tv…they dwell in their own dark pits…pulled by the fantasia created in a box for them….
    .
parents find it easy to compensate them with such products…when they know what they want…thanks to tv, thanks to escaping parents….once the ‘terror’ strikes suddenly they wake up huh? why create children I wonder?
    .
so many factors if u go on….so many complexities of life, atleast one can take charge of these minute issues….
    .
Lately I saw an indian advt on a tv…some brand tv…i forgot…where a spider man pops up from the screen and the child says it’s better sound blah blah and the mother too agrees to it….very
    .
very stoopid advt r they trying to say that day has come when the kids will dictate what is good for mothers??? lOOol or for family. by making it a fashion and status statement that this tv is good because it is large and blah blah blah
    .
jesus what rubbish we r getting into?

  13. I would say a ‘Happy, balanced, stable’ society is much more important than a rich nation….
and now don’t tell me if we are not rich how can you achieve this?
    .
we need to halt, take a look within….choose between whether we want to focus on our internal issues or spend those resources in trying to win a rat race, just to prove we are intelligent? powerful?
Or try to kill those moments in trying to achieve what we humans consider as
    .
    ‘Success’
    .
the resources in spending for olympic stadiums, nuclear warfare, terrorism, political nonsense, blah blah could be used for
    .
    internal peace and balance
    .
systematic medical support and system for all…if health is taken charge of …battles of life can be faced…
    .
    hospitals for poor n needy
    .
    old age homes
    .
    educational concepts for the needy
    .
    water
    .
    orphanages
    .
Food control, its purpose in the market and its results on health
    .
proper legal systems, laws that are applicable to all equally …but oh! let me remind myself…In india legal support is for the rich only lolll sheesh!
    .
each month if the govt of india focuses on not spending on rubbish to win a rat race…and invest in each state, village one by one…can we imagine how many changes would come?
    .
Instead of building a ‘temple’ or whatever…if that very resources would be used for medical investement, can we see some beautiful change? Where ever u build such things ask the people ask them by giving a choice and see the response!! none will need all this rubbish….they will choose rightly…
    .
oh! we have apollo hospitals na? why worry lol…rest of the ones who cant afford can go to hell…the ones who spill their blood to make others rise….let them perish…we have mass human production LOOOOl
    .
forget staduims…lets not race with others let them be…let them dwell in their own glory….lets invest in some old age homes? with healthy concepts for them to atleast die with some dignity?
    .
na but we will be happy to use these resources to build some freaking dynamic ‘Temples’Mosques blah blah to prove we are sOOOOOOOOOOOOoooo HOLY…eeks!!! Rubbish
Psst actually to hell with India…lol Im tired…honestly….
we have such high human/natural resources in this country. that the entire world will bow down to us if we keep that balance within ourselves.
    but na! na!
    .
We are blindly to follow our hammered destiny by a handful of clouts…with focus just on themselves…or jump like idiots to reach that ‘graph’ manmade statistics which makes one feel proud we are ‘Successful’
    .
we must become powerful and rich, and for this we must permit nonsense to filter
    .
A price to pay for manmade ‘Success’ and ‘Greed’
    phew!!
Im Off to PloOOto…where the land is raw lolll

  14. Pardon me for me disposal(habit)
    .
Please ask yourself why they watched so much tv?
    .
where did one escape n let them watch tv?
    .
Now we stand and blame tv…did the babies ask to get them a tv? did they know what channels they should watch while adults could escape?
    .
food values who is responsible to educate the kids? TV?
    .
compensating kids with such garbage …why?
    .
mothers are either working too hard to make ends meet or they are wanting to challenge the males species, or they are bored….
    OR
    .
men are handling babies…they are equally wonderful nurturers, they too humans after all…but then such small issues if handled in time will save a lot in the future…imagine you having health and child not?
    .
humans after all…but then little bit of education to children by them would take them a long way….
    .
ladies want to watch a certain channel…and so let the kids watch too….men want to watch a certain channel let the kids watch too…as who will take the headache of seeing what the children should do while they watch? and the garbage they show on tv yuk it sucks….
    .
and best of it all….let kids just watch their channels…atleast they are shut and not eating your brains because their creativity is boiling within them….make them a couch potatoe…dont let them go out and play with other kids…because who knows
    .
he/she may be too poor for ur standards?
    .
    maybe having some illness?
    .
maybe not educated enuff to stand to your kids level?
    .
maybe his/her father has a mistress so it will cause some impact on ur child? loool
    .
maybe some female is having an exmarital affair so ur kid will get spoilt with her kid…lol
    .
maybe a servants kid too joins in, so it will bring down ur standard…
    .
maybe the designer clothes will get dirty lol
    .
maybe ur kid will start demanding something that another rich kid will have?
    .
Best is when You dont watch tv…kids wont follow….when they are not around or busy go watch tv….but wait….bringing a child is really no childs play…honestly…its asks ‘sacrifice’ and future generations follow what you taught…perhaps with few changes….their habit is passed on gracefully…
why not let the child get into some creativity of their own…some art…some dance…some group where they can join even after school…and do things with real creativity which is fun and learning…me thinks such institutes too should come up…but then again I wonder…parents would shove these kids from school to here lol…easy Easyyy
ufff wot am i doing in PloootOO too loll…..aw!
