Confusing Indian elections

I find these elections confusing. I completely support all the NGO’s that are making great efforts to et everyone to vote, and striving to provide details of the candidates at a click of an sms request on your cell phone.
But what do the parties stand for ? The platform for everyone seems to be why the other party was not the right candidate. The electioneering seems to be completely negative. Putting down the opposing candidate. Why I should not vote for the other Candidate, not why I should vote for you ?
Why should I vote for you ?

  1. Dear Shekhar,
Your clarity of thought amazes me. More importantly it comforts me that thoughts which are bothering me are also bothering someone else. One look at the candidates and you feel frustated that the future of our little ones are going to be dependant on the consequences of what these people will do or won’t.
The refrain about the people who complain should stand for elections somehow does not gel because it is a loser argument.
Today lack of values pervades not only politics and their practitioners but the whole works of the country , the businessmen, working class and the medical practititioners and even the agriculturists.
One wonder if there is a magic wand to wave and cleanse the system at one go.

  2. That sounds just about right Shekhar !! When I was in College. I studied in Hindu college, Delhi University year 1988, when Mandal commission happened and stupid college students started burning other cars, buses for a guy who didn’t knew what he was doing in the first place…I don’t remember his name but he was an ABVP guy.. which is a BJP young students body to begin with…We saw the way they campaign in colleges by floating their posters and lots of papers all around.. THE point is : WHAT are these elections stand for ?? who controls their actions ? WHY they do it because we get WHAT ? Do we get any better ? Does our system gets better ? nothing happens when somebody wins..they enjoy, have a blast and help those who helped those win, in the end. SIMPLE business as usual. This is like BIDDING on ebay where you set a price and keep a check what others are bidding, same as in elections what others are saying. I guess NGOs are doing their job what they are suppose to do.. now what they( Contenders) are suppose to do.. What these elections are suppose to do ? Believe me I saw every bit of OBAMA campaign till the last moment when he was inaugurated as President and was emotional to me, being an Indian, working in USA. I saw him a GLOBAL leader who would do some change for better atleast.. atleast his first 100 days were much better than any president we saw. WHAT is important is that ” atleast people believe that he is such a guy to change things”
I was thinking.. wishing when would we have such a Leader, Leader where people can attach themselves emotionally. Because one thing happens when you are emotionally attached, you really want to know what he is DOING. You then, like to read, see CNN all the time..Analyze and take proper decision at your level. Now this is lacking in our THINKING process in India.
Another thing – Younger folks should come forward unlike people in colleges who stand mostly by creating fear in colleges rather than their Decision making as a Leader. Something needs to change.. NOW again not all is BAD in politics but it’s all so messed up.. people who vote and make them elect are unfortunately the people who need bread properly every month & can be bought at any level plus they are protected by wrong forces of Goondaism.
Something mandatory has to happen to change the way people think. I guess education for every child should be LEGAL like USA, whether rich or poor should be a first step. Any school, any Village,. any college, parent has to have their child go to school no matter what.. Let it be free in Schools. BUT should be a penalty if they don’t allow.

  3. democracy is a situation of little choice than any other govermental system with no choice.Hence, vote for sake of that smal right..

  4. Vote for BJP! They are the lesser of the evils. Give Narendra Modi a chance to implement his development vision to the whole of India. Do not fall for the pseudo-secularist agenda of the UPA and buffoons like Lalu and Paswan.

  5. I agree completely about the negativity in these elections (perhaps except BJP which takes a strong stance in communicating its manifesto).
However the NGOs are merely baking awareness into the voting culture, so that perhaps next time more people ask the same questions as you do in this post.

  6. Sir,
Why should I vote for you?
    Why ELECTIONS at all?
Why don’t we have an ALL PARTY Government?
Why does it matter who is standing for MP/MLA ?
    Why do we need DEMOCRACY?
Why don’t the NGO put up their own candidate?
Why do Corporates Fund Political Parties?
Why it is important to go and BEG for votes?
Why were the last 5 years insufficient for your constituency to know you?
Why don’t you get elected in every Election?
Why don’t you perform once you get elected?
Why do the elected MP/MLA dont have a say in the party once he gets elected?
Why do party leadership is more important than the manifesto?
Why does the Country comes second to Politics?
    WHY WHY WHY?

  8. Well said Shekar! All we get to hear is how this person that person is not a good candidate and how we shud not vote for them…no talk about why we shud for the party in question. Low blows and bickering…finger point, and mud slinging…horrible..went to vote for the first time in a long time though..for some reason felt I shud awaken from apathy and do something even if it is casting a vote for an independent candidate…not a vote for the major political parties but against them…so sick of their circus and machinations.

  9. “Power will go to the hands of rascals, rogues and freebooters. All Indian leaders will be of low calibre and men of straw. They will have sweet tongues and silly hearts. They will fight among themselves for power and India will be lost in political squabbles.”
    – Sir Winston Churchill (1874 – 1965). He was the prime minister of the United Kingdom from 1940 to 1945, and again from 1951 to 1955.
“You can’t make corruption an issue for deciding the political programme and understanding between political parties. (In this manner) we can’t have an understanding with any political party.”

  10. In all respect cast your vote…
somewhere in your blog you mentioned about zen that even if a grass is plucked it has its effect in ether…so is your vote
You must vote not for yourself but for your children…for tomorrow…if we take a person active life for 50 years and divide by 5 average years … then the person votes only 10 times in life? isn’t it? vote for tomorrow…instead of being sad about politics and situation, and how Mumbai has the lowest vote turn out, please do vote…trust me it is for our children future

  11. Democracy is a farce, its a dirty number game
100 crore indians, 40 crore voters 20 crore vote, 23%of 20crore votes to become PM and form Govt.
this means 10% of india decides the fate of 90%
Its a game and a shame, so are all the other forms of governments farcical and dirty.
Anarchy is not the truth …. natural anarchy is it. but only nature can achieve that, on its own, not man and his thoughts

  12. I voted for the first time and I am mighty thrilled to have exercised my vote:)I wasn’t confused- I voted because it is my right:)
