Bihar floods : “I could not find my village”

This appeal was posted by Abhay :
Dear Shekharji
I have just returned from my home in Saharasa ( Bihar) and could not locate my village easily, forget about exact location of my house. Its just an array of diseases, hunger and depression prevailing in population.
Please do something for us. I know you are a big person. Our history might have been great but the fact today is that we are dying and help from outside is grossly missing. its just visible in roadside areas. I even don’t feel proud of being a part of India which could not give us a life free of floods in these 60 years of independence.

    Dear,
I am at loss to read this. Nature’s fury is like you cant compare with anything…you know…there are things in this world which have alternatives. Nature has no alternative. Its the results of us humans who have done damage.
Be strong. I know how hard it is for you. Pray.
I would like to tell you this…even when you are not in position to see your home…may be you may get this later…one quote of Einstien
“Every act of destruction is in fact an act of creation” (and vice-versa)

  3. Dear Abhay,
I can understand your plight but the situation was no better when Bombay was flooded 2 years back and took many many weeks to recover after the rains. I think the aid has to come from Central and State govt’s and as provite citizens all we can do is give some money to aid organizations (here in the US or in India) but it is truly upto them to execute the plan. Aid Collection drives are pretty common here and almost every employee gives something – how much of that reaches the target location is another matter. All I can say is hold on to your life – after bad days good days will come and life will continue – one day you’ll even forget about these days.
    keep well,
    Himanshu

  5. The water has still not receded?
Recovery will take time, I guess.
I just pray some of the funds being raised reach the people it is meant for.
On a separate note, look at nature’s fury in the recent times- top notch hurricanes, an earthquake, flooding as a river changes course…Cant help thinking we’ve missed a step somewhere.

  6. Dear Abhay,
It is distressing to read your account about the situation in your hometown. I hope help can get there asap. It is so frustrating. Why don’t we have a disaster managment team in India that can get to these remote locations when the inevitable happens. Why do we hear the same story again and again? Forget about rehablitation, we are not even equipped for immediate rescue operations. Why has the Bihar tragedy got such little internatinal or even national attention?
Abhay, things will improve, however dark the situation seems now. Take care and hold in there. These events in life test our resilience and make us stronger beings.
AJ thanks for the information on the program. I shall pass it on to my friends on the west coast. Do let us know if you come across something in the east side.
The CM relief fund is taking donations. But that is not online. Are there any online donation methods?

  7. Hi Shekhar,
I had a question and suggestion. Could you possibly get a ‘Latest Comments’ widget for your blog? That would be very nice to have to track the various threads of conversations. It also lets us know if someone said something interesting about an old topic. Usually while browsing a blog, one heads straight for the active topics. But many a times the older topics also throw up new ideas and comments for which this tool is useful.
Your admin folks I am sure would be tuned in to what tool to use for the purpose but incase not, there are many downloadable widgets that can easily serve the purpose. I could dig out some for you if required.
    Regards,
    Ritu

  10. Hi, i am from Sitamarhi. I feel the reason for the continuity of this huge problem, is mainly, it happens too often and as people we have grown to think of it as a part of our life. But, as we are getting connected to the rest of the world, we see no reason for the negligence to this particular region( also NE India, Orissa etc. and so many small isolated regions.)
I have tried to convey a little part of this anguish through a tragic strip http://biharfloodquotes.blogspot.com
I think only way out is some kind of huge collaboration, in what form, format, let’s discuss.
    regards

  11. It’s posts like these that really bring everything down for me. It makes me realize just how selfish of a person I am and how privileged I am to be living in a country where I have a clean home, medical benefits, and no threats of floods.
I’m so very sorry to hear of this, and I sincerely hope that Abhay and the other survivors find relief soon. I’ll be praying.

  12. Sometimes it’s really that simple, isn’t it? I feel a little stupid for not thinking of this myself/earlier, though.
