The unified theory of everything, faith and emotion

There will never be a scientific unified theory of everything. Simply because the mind consistently looks to define while the universe exists on infinite layers of existence. Which are both true and not true at the same mpment. How can something be true and not true at the same time ? But then we have always lived with that dichotomy. We learn to evaluate space and objects through measurements in the three dimensions. We learn to perceive distance, which we can measure. Even unamiganibly large distances in terms of ‘light years’. We learn and are adhered to the linearity of ‘time’. Time is running out is something we always say.
Yet we live in a universe that cannot be be measured. It is infinite. We learn to ‘fix’ the beginning of time from different contexts. For science it was the Big Bang, for Religion it was – for example – ‘and God said ‘let there be light;. But essentially we cannot imagine the end or the beginning of time simply because there is none. We cannot measure or imagine the end of the Universe simply there is none. Our concepts of measurement exist only as contexts between two measurable points. Take one away then there is no context and therefore no ability to measure.

So why are we willing to live with this anomaly ? Where time and our universe are both immeasurable and measurable at the same ‘time’. Because if time has no beginning and no end, then it does not have linearity, and the oft repeated phrase ‘time is running’ is false. But then all our five senses are telling us it IS running out. Our body clock tells us we are getting older. So here is the issue – we sense the body clock running out and watch our skin wrinkle and we give this process of aging a value of ‘time’. Yet this is not the same ‘time’ that is eternal, for which we can imagine neither a beginning nor an end. Time too has a different interpretation depending upon how you ‘look’ at it.
Similarly the universe is both measurable and immeasurable at the same moment. And if the universe is infinite then there can no measurable distance between two points in space – how can you measure the distance between yourself and infinity – for there is none ! In fact then there are simply no two points in space. There is no point, because even a point is imagined as a dot that has measurement. In an infinite universe therefore there is nothing. And in time with no beginning and no end, there is no decipherable moment even. Just an eternity. Is there a unified theory of ‘eternity’ ?
Imagine this. from nothing to almost everything. Everything contained in nothing. Depending upon which way you look at it. Like the snap of a magicians finger and you are embroiled in life, death, science, logic, relationships, hunger, sex, yearning, fear, pollution, global warming, job, ambition, internet, facebok …..
and another snap of the finger and ….. nothing. Just eternity. No observer, no observed – Everything JUST IS. Or is not as some will argue….
….Looking at ourselves in the linear time and measurable space matrix, we do get a glimpses of eternity through emotion. And faith. We use the word ‘eternal’ when we talk about love, and then quickly get back to measurable perception and start to be afraid of the end of the ‘eternal’ love. But for a brief moment we do explore infinite space and time. We use faith often to develop mythology around the universe in circular story telling like the Mahabharath with worlds of Gods and humans interacting in never ending cycles. The concept of God is a deep subconscious connection with nothingness – with eternity – that we hang on to – but we bring that back to world of the measured and destroy each other.
We have lived in that dichotomy always, looking for reality by defining truth as a singularity – yet the Universe exists in every truth that you imagine, but also at the same time and moment it does not exist in that truth either. It is the search for one or the other, for the one truth, for the singular answer, the need to define, this or that rather both, that will stop us discovering the unified theory of everything. Fascinating as the string theory is.
I prefer to live in emotion. I try and look at everything emotionally . That stops me form taking in extreme definitions and allows me to access feelings and insights beyond the measurable, the defined world. zi will talk about that too, if some one asks,

  1. Dear Shekhar,
The unified self (The nothingness) is the ultimate truth. And thats why love (the eternal latent desire to unify) is the true emotion and when you say that you prefer to live in emotion, you are stating what is the true nature of being.
When you are in that state, you transcend the corporeal existence and touch the ultimate reality.
It’s the innate and many other layers of fear that deform the psyche and stop seeing the connection.

  2. Dear Shekhar,
I agree that it’ll be very difficult to come up with a unified theory of everything unless we accept everything as real or an illusion – unless we know for sure that the truth that we see is the real truth or just imagined truth or truth for the moment. Like 25 yrs back Indira Gandhi was prime minister and today she is not there – if we take time away from the equation then that just may be another world happening in the mind of the global consciousness as compared to the one we are experiencing – it may not even be 25 yrs ago at all – as everything is/was in the imagination of the people. So the theory can only explain reality and ONE REALITY that should exist for all, and that I think does not exist due to the myriads of thoughts/emotions that go through us all the time. The best way is to be a part of eternity to see ourselves as a flowing river where we neither see the beginning or the end – to just enjoy the moment and connect with bliss.
I found these great quotes to explain what I am trying to say – the first one talks about ETERNITY, KNOWLEDGE AND BLISS – all are endless.
“In your life, you forget your “Always State” or “Always Form”. You forget everything. However, you are already always that! There is only eternity, knowledge and bliss. But you’re still terrified it might not be true. That is ego at work. Ego keeps one from being free. We want to taste all these experiences. And the ego makes it possible. Don’t curse the ego. So many scriptures curse the ego self. Instead, look at your life as about choices, experiences and desires–that you are already liberated. Don’t be afraid of desire. That is why you’re here, to taste, live.”

In eternity there is indeed something true and sublime. But all these times
and places and occasions are now and here. God himself culminates
in the present moment and will never be more divine in the lapse
of the ages. Time is but a stream I go a-fishing in. I drink at it, but when
I drink I see the sandy bottom and detect how shallow it is.
Its thin current slides away but eternity remains.

  3. Hiya Shekhar,
The above for me seemed like botany physics chemistry…and i did fail in all lol…
    All i know is…
Each emotion we tend to dissect, each emotion we tend to seek answers and questions, each question becomes yet another answer, and vis versa…
end of it all…the truth really goes beyond all this
    .
    .
    ‘Emotion’
Cant be weighed, cant be calculated, it is an amazing feeling having its own seat in the core…
and ah! let this feeling kill or give life…atleast the feeling is in ye and me…and us all of course!!
    ****Koizeeeeeen*****kaha ho???????
bahar niklo lol…table ke neeche kya kar rahe ho?? errm!
    shmile!!

  4. The whole universe is how YOU look at it!
Time, is man made tool. So, we have time zones, clocks, deadlines etc. And we literally – have taken “time” as something more important then life!…its bad to such an extent that it preceeds your individual self!
The thing is, even our body clock got attuned to OUR feelings. How many times we think, I must get up at so-and-so time and it JUST happens that at the exact stroke, we wake up!
I too feel there may not be unified theory of “Everything” and the reason is very simple. We are changing, evolving all the time.
Gosh again the word time has come! 200 years before, nobody thought that blood circulates, or a hundred years before if you tell anyone that with atoms one can destroy one million of population, they would laugh at you. But Hiroshima/Nagasaki was bombed by an atom bomb.
WE are living atoms! Every core inside our being…so much yet to be explored…but reality …looking is rather for present only. What was real 100 years ago may not be and what will be after 100 years may not be what is ‘real’ today.
So…I think it’s on each individual how (s) he looks at the world, universe and also one’s own true self. What one realizes today, is truth for today, but will it be defined?
Say I realize “death” and “hunger” are two universal truth…eternal truths…and proclaim that this is ultimate truth…but tomorrow there may be medicine to prolong your age, or one would not feel hungry for months, yet all the body parts will function well…then my truth will fall flat!
Hence, unified theory of everything may not be possible, or for that matter for us humans to know the origin of universe or the death of it. Others will ‘discover’ ‘invent’ measurements for us humans to live by…hence the ‘clock’, the time zones etc all man made. Who knows, tomorrow, for better we may discover a new meaning to time…”Breaths”
…Breath is running out…instead of time is running out…an instrument by which you know a person’s life span in breaths.
So its all on our individual self as how we see the world and universe but what do we do with our living, our own self that’s what is more important and if we cannot bring the unified theory of everything, through positivity and hope, faith, if a person can bring unified theory of living in present time, things would be great…would’nt they Shekharji?

  5. one of the failings of education, especially in the management schools,is that very often the linear and the logical, the measurable and the tangible, the finite and the definite are considered superior to anything else. “Give me facts and figures” scream the corporate head honchos. The ‘other side’ as it were is termed generously as touchy – feely, iffy and perhaps emotional. What a pity we are more and more being converted into the non-emotional and the robotic generation. would love to here about your insights with emotions.

  6. Shekhar,
Your post(and Himanshu’s following it) have somehow left me unsettled. Unsettled and restless. It is like someone suddenly jerks you out of sweet reverie and places you in front of a gigantic waterfall, a waterfall that engulfs your vision. You don’t see anything before it and anything beyond it, nothing but the dark falling waters. Roaring down from nowhere and disappearing into a whirlpool of nothingness. Muddy brown, grey, black molasses-like and incessantly flowing.
“Beyond the waterfall, there is light … enlightenment”.
A small voice hidden in some crevice of my mind tries to console me. My eyes grapple for a hook, but I don’t see any, not even a speck of light. I just see a dark impenetrable wall of water engulfing my vision. Light seems to be eons away.
“The wall is an illusion, the water.. fluid, ever-flowing, the truth. Water that knows no shape, no form, no colour, no fragrance. Water that disappears with heat and appears out of nowhere in cool caverns. Water. Can something so transient be a wall? Step through, move in, there is light.”
The voice continues, gentle and persuasive. But I am numbed. But I am too much in awe and fear of the waterfall to slice through it and get there. It is vast and intimidating. My mind craves for the cocoon of security and solidity that my world provides, my little world of illusion, my world of flesh and blood.
My mind is small, very small…infinitesimal and the truth, infinite. Do I have the perseverance and strength to seek the truth? The great sages and peers, those who spent a lifetime seeking and yet they only scratched the surface. How can an average mind like mine ever hope to get anywhere? Will there ever be a connection or will I always hang between the illusion of this very finite life and the hazy awareness of the existence of the infinite?
It is easy to live a life delusional – unaware and happy. It is unsettling to come to the edge of the waterfall and turn away. Each time I try to seek the larger truth of existence I feel stymied. I feel inadequate. I come to the edge of the waterfall, grapple for a hook and then turn away. Will I even come to the point when I can throw a rock into the wall and gauge it’s depth. Or will I always keep standing here like this.. tongue-tied?
Sigh.. I guess enlightenment truly is for a chosen few!
P.S Sorry totally Zen thoughts. But they just flowed after reading this exchange. Small minds, huge fears.

  7. hi shekhar……as we are part of God’s game it is our karma to identify with and live to the best of our ability, the human life given to us ? as such, all of us are also part of the illusion……? yet we take ourselves and each other seriously enough to be here and express our thoughts and feelings within the human realm ?
my experience is that,if we are aware of our eternal being and consciousness while living our human avataar then it keeps us balanced and stops us from going mad due to either success, failure, joy, sorrow…….and all the human pitfalls that are designed to trick us or trip us.
while choosing to live emotionally…….are you tapping into your subconscious self…….the eternal one……whose emptiness brings peace and tranquility as opposed to the worldly you that is trapped into the concept of time, space, action-reaction…….cacophony of existence ?

  8. another simpler option i have always chosen and never regretted is the one of ‘living in faith’………….
innumerable times have i been guided by an unknown hand in times of dilemna and somehow things get sorted out……..and if something just does not fall in place ……..have patience and you will see the reason why……..soon enough !
what God intends to create through you will not happen without you………so where’s the fire :)??????
    have a nice day !

  10. ahhh
the unified field seeking me in the depth of my dreams…
    like an exquisite detailed mandala…
    painted by a Tibetan Monk…
    coming alive …
in the miraculous glorious movement …
of the Olympic opening ceremony . ..
    in China…
    ah…
    look at this…
    I don’t need to go to Beijing…
as I see it here …
in a single drop of my blood …
    a living cell …
    breathing me in …
    shining forth …
    in the damaged bone…
    of my face…
as if laughing at me …
    Can’t you see???
I live in the wounds of your soul …
    seeking you …
    in compassion …
    and unity …
    ah…
    how magnificent …
    this divine symphony …
    a circle …
with infinite forms and shapes …
held by a triangle of alchemy …
    rising upwards…
    towards the point of origin…
    superimposed by a pointed star
the symbol of a human soul …
aspiring for a higher unity …
    the mystical centre…
    as above …
    so below …
    aahhh…
    how astoundingly miraculous …
    and yet …
    how paradoxically tormenting …
    to this being human …
    dying of asphyxiation…
    from projected …
    divided …
    thoughts, deeds and actions …
    like leprous spirits …
    hiding …
    in medieval caves…
    and yet…
    there lies the miracle …
as we are born as sons and daughters of the cosmos…
an image of infinite possibilities of creation…
    echoed …
by the wounds of the great prophets…
reminding us to rise above …
    as containers…
of the reproduction of the universe …
    urged …
    to unite…
    from deep…
    underneath…
    ahhh …
the glorious dance of infinity …
    living…
    in every wounded cell…
    healed …
    by the purity …
    of every ascending …
    unifying …
    breath …

  11. As rightly thought by you ‘There will never be a scientific unified theory of everything. Simply because the mind consistently looks to define.’
So lets stop defining. ture and untrue are concepts created by us. Since both coexists, they mean the same.
Illusionary world and real world mean the same
measurable and unmeasurable mean the same.
Similary if time is inifnite then the begining and the end is the same.

  13. ‘….Looking at ourselves in the linear time and measurable space matrix, we do get a glimpses of eternity through emotion. And faith’
    emotion – interchangeable with imagination/inspiration?
    – those rare moments when “this corpoeal frame” is suspended and i “become a living soul”, and “see into the life of things”? – that was Wordsworth. he achieved this condition in the presence of nature with whom he had an intense, intimate rapport.
    – 99% perspiration, 1% inspiration – Keats twists this proverbial wisdom extolling hardword/persistence in order to shift emphasis to the 1%, without which the 99% is rendered futile. he claims it is that 1% which enanble a poet to see into the life of things, or Isaac Newton to crack the truth about gravity.
    – that was Budha’s Nirvanic experience.
our rational/intellectual faculties enable/prompt us to put grids on the unmeasurables, on the infinite. our imagination/emotion which transcend the rational, sees beyond the limits of the rational.
guess that’s what that great poet critic meant by ‘feeling the thought and thinking the feeling’ – that unified sensibilities helps demystify many a conundrum.

  14. if you prefer to live emotionally……..do you get conned by an individual who knows your pulse and plays the cards right and presses the right buttons enough to make a bakra of you….when all along you know that person has an agenda…and the behaviour is a clever act until the desired result is achieved…?
somehow, i got the feeling that you were a shrewd man inspite of your capacity for introspection…….. and capacity for feelings of depth……but sometimes the so called ‘dumb’ seem to make the intelligent but emotional ‘toe the line’……..dont they ?
they allow the intelligent to surf the net (hell i even know of a case where an intelligent person’s curiousity made him hack into another’s e mails and tap the telephone line without the person getting wind of it !)…….and ‘live free’…..but like a puppet on a chain……..:)
a case of ‘clever dumb people’ !
as for you……….mr emotional ! bach ke rehna!! good luck to you !
hey…..these are just thoughts roaming free and finding expression on your blog :)…..dont mind them !

  15. Strangely, today morning I remembered your blog about unified theory…it kept reminding me to search it in your blog. I forgot what I typed and now searched for it.
You are right there cannot be unified theory of everything.
    Because of the word “UNCERTAINTY”
We humans are evolving and at the same time curious…that leads to uncertainty…we start to do something and then do something else…uncertain…so any one who is interested in unified theory actually should form lots of opinion on theory of uncertainty…
